People are living in fear, more must be done to tackle crime

Dear Editor,

The crime situation is frightening. Many trained people seem to be involved. The Ministry of Home Affairs need to urgently look at the rapid decline of law and order. Indifference and negligence will eventually lead to complete chaos. This is a time bomb in the hands of the Government and Guyanese will give up on their hope and tolerance against the killing of innocent people for there is only so much people will be able to tolerate.

Criminals create fear and terror in every Guyanese home, living in Guyana is like a virtual hell due to fear. Police indifference to respond in cases of emergency is the worst in the Caribbean and West Indies.

There are organised crime gangs with trained people spearheading these attacks when, where, how and whom. A man in the street with no training would know this.

The brutality is indescribable. Innocent rice farmers, businessmen and women, fishermen, labourers, clerics, the young and the old are subjected to the worst humiliation, torture, pain, fear and death. Shame on this government that nothing is being done to alleviate the fear of its citizens.

In India, there are railway police, airport police and the regular police working together to combat crime in places where people are vulnerable to attacks. As such tourism in India is very high and people feel relatively safe to move with much freedom.

In Guyana the gover-nment will have to unconditionally implement some patterns of crime control taken from other countries in order to combat the scourge of drugs and crime. The present police force are inefficient, indisciplined and in some cases corrupt.

Yours faithfully,

Shiva Sankar
