REMANDED: Mark Forde
ACTING Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday upheld a Police objection and denied bail to ex-policeman Mark Forde, 36, of Lot 66 First Street, Craig, East Bank Demerara, who is charged with rape.

The indictable charge, proffered amidst publicly expressed concerns by the victim’s family, said the accused had carnal knowledge of an 18-year-old last October 10.

Police Corporal Munilall Seetaram, prosecuting, objected to the grant of pre-trial freedom to Forde, on the grounds that he will tamper with witnesses and the seriousness of the offence.

Defence Counsel Roger Yearwood said Forde, married and a father of three, was employed with Roraima Airways but has been off the job since the allegation surfaced.

The lawyer pointed out that it is now nine months since the alleged incident took place and said the accused is not a flight risk.

Yearwood challenged the Prosecution to provide proof that Forde will, indeed, interfere with the witnesses.

The virtual complainant, who was in the courtroom, claimed the accused is spreading rumours that she had an affair with him and wanted him to break his relationship with his wife.

The magistrate transferred the case to Providence Court, also on East Bank Demerara and remanded Forde to prison through June 26.
