Teacher heads to jail on demanding charge

Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson, at the Georgetown Magistrates Court, yesterday remanded a city teacher, who allegedly lured a 16-year-old student from a city school into a hotel last week, to prison.
It was alleged that the Rohan Bishop, 24, of 117 Meadow Brook Gardens, on June 8, last, with menace and the intent to steal, demanded the sum of $10,000 from a student for the procurement of securing a passing grade. He pleaded not guilty.
The parties were however called up to the bench, and after a lengthy discussion, the accused was remanded to prison. He is expected to make another court appearance on June 24.
The teacher allegedly promised the student better grades, then he lured the female student to an East Bank Demerara hotel.
However, his plans were thwarted as the student’s mother and relatives managed to execute a set-up to corner the amorous perpetrator.
According to the student the teacher’s advances began a year ago when she failed two exams.
