Masked bandits kill labourer

Bandits in the Corentyne area shot dead a 34-year old labourer during a brutal robbery spree on Saturday night.
Ganesh Ramkellawan was pronounced dead on arrival at the New Amsterdam Hospital, where he was rushed one hour after the shooting which occurred at around 19:00 hours.
This newspaper understands that four bandits had earlier shot businessman Amarnauth Jaggernauth in his abdomen and thighs during the attack on the community of Chesney, which is located aback of the Albion Estate.

During the attack, the men who were armed with a shotgun, a handgun and cutlasses robbed two households.
According to the police, businessman Amarnauth Jaggernauth, 53 of Back Street, Chesney, Corentyne was closing the gate to his premises when four masked men approached him.
The men discharged a round from the shotgun, injuring Jaggernauth. They then took him into his home where they also held up his wife.
The bandits took away his licensed revolver and ammunition, $500,000, jewellery and phone cards.

 


The armed gang then went next door to the residence of Maniram Doodnauth who along with his wife and other relatives had abandoned the building upon hearing the gunshot. The men entered the building, ransacked it and carried away $40,000 cash, two cell phones and jewellery.
As the perpetrators were escaping along the Street, they fired a shot from the shotgun at Ramkellawan, who was standing by the gate to his premises. He was hit in his chest.
After the bandits escaped, Ramkellawan was picked up and taken to the hospital but by then he had succumbed to his injury.

The police recovered five spent shells and one live 12-gauge cartridge at the scenes.
Investigations are ongoing.
