Gunman snatches $4M in jewellery at Leonora Market

A brazen robber escaped with over $4M in gold jewellery shortly after 06:00hrs yesterday after holding a young goldsmith at gunpoint and locking him in a stall at the Leonora Market.

Police identified the victim as 19-year-old Kumar, called Ravi of Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara.

According to reports, Kumar had gone to the Leonora Market to open his family's jewellery stall when a man who was armed with a gun attacked him.

After relieving the businessman of a bag containing a large quantity of jewellery, the gunmen locked Kumar in his stall and fled.

The goldsmith eventually managed to break out of the stall and raise an alarm. However, by this time the robber was nowhere to be seen.

This is the second major robbery on the West Coast of Demerara in a week.

Just a few days ago, three gunmen stole over $500,000 and a minibus from an Anna Catherina beverage store after beating the owners and a 15-year-old boy.
